NATA’S SAFETY 1st PROGRAM EXPANDS
Alexandria, VA, June 17, 2002 As part of its continuing efforts to enhance the safety, security and efficiency of general aviation aircraft servicing, the National Air Transportation Association (NATA) announced the recent purchase of the Aircraft Ground Service Guide (AGSG) and the Aircraft Towing Guide (ATG) from Sandpiper Publications. Both publications are considered the definitive aircraft reference sources for FBOs, airports, pilots, government agencies, aircraft consulting companies and many other international entities.

The Aircraft Ground Service Guide applies to pistons, turboprops and jets and includes information concerning aircraft fuel requirements and capacity; performance specifications; ground-power locations and requirements; tire pressure requirements; and pertinent aircraft weights and dimensions. The training and reference materials also have detailed drawings highlighting the service locations and requirements for each aircraft.

The Aircraft Towing Guide contains reference material provided by aircraft manufacturers on recommended towing guidelines for a wide variety of aircraft. In-depth towing information is included for Beechcraft, British Aerospace, CASA, Cessna, Dassault, Gulfstream, Lockheed, Piper and Sabreliner aircraft.

The pricing structure for the two publications is as follows:
AGSG Black and White Print, $19.95
AGSG Black and White CD-ROM, $19.95
ATG Black and White Print, $19.95
ATG Black and White CD-ROM, $19.95

"With the acquisition of these well-respected reference manuals, NATA's Safety 1st professional Line Service Training clearly sets the industry standard," said Alan Darrow, NATA vice president. "The program provides outstanding benefits for FBOs, their customers and employees at an incredibly affordable price," he added.

For additional information on the Aircraft Ground Service Guide, Aircraft Towing Guide, and NATA's Safety 1st line-service training and testing program, contact Amy Koranda at 800/808-6282 or by e-mail at akoranda@nata-online.org.

SEMINAR NEWS
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please remember the Line Service Supervisor Training Seminar (LSST) is a required part of the NATA Safety 1st Program. If you have already sent someone from your business, please feel free to skip to the next paragraph. If not, it is required that one person from your line service, usually the supervisor, attend an LSST. And remember, as long as that person remains with your company, the LSST requirement has been met for Safety 1st.
The next LSST will be held in Baltimore, Maryland on September 26 & 27, 2002. There will only be one more LSST this year in Tulsa, Oklahoma on November 7 & 8, 2002. Check our website for additional hotel information and to register online.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Train the Trainer will be held on September 25, 2002 a day in advance of the LSST. The additional day is extremely valuable if you conduct any training at your facility. Taught by Frank Surface, our popular HR trainer in the LSST, it is a very interactive seminar with many training tips and techniques followed up by hands-on exercises specific to aviation. You not only learn great techniques but you will come away knowing what kind of trainer you are and why you teach the way you do.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2002 NATA Deicing and Anti-icing Workshop will be held at the Ramada Inn, BWI Airport on September 25, 2002. Don't miss out on the latest technological advances and safety information. The course will be led by Lyondell and Ascent Technologies.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Financial Management Tools and Techniques for Aviation Service Businesses, will be held October 3 & 4, 2002 in Denver, Colorado. Our new Negotiations Seminar will follow on October 5, 2002. Both seminars are priced to be taken on their own or together. Our recommendation would be not to miss either seminar. Both are a must for anyone responsible for running a smooth aviation business.

Phil Botana and Mark Chambers, experts in all aspects of the FBO business, will lead both the Financial Management and Negotiations seminars. All information is aviation specific with hands-on exercises that compliment and reinforce your learning experience. Hotel and registration information is on our website.

****FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) --- NATA Safety 1st
and Fueling Issues
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This section will help you with the paperwork and study process.
In addition, we will include other questions about fueling issues
that are frequently asked. If you have any tips to share, please
submit them to us and we will include them in upcoming e-Lines.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"... FYI Jet A spade nozzles do not fit MD-500s, jet rangers or
the new piper mirage. Because they also damage the filler necks on BE-200's, I will soon...consider discontinuing their use..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Industry expert Mike Mooney, Vice President - Technical &
Operations for Air BP Aviation Services says...

"Many line service technicians complain that the j-spout (OPW 295 SAJ)
nozzles do not fit into turbine powered helicopters such as MD-500s, Bell
Jet Rangers. There are even a few turbine powered fixed wing aircraft that
do not accept the j-spout. You also mentioned the BE-200 and how it
damages the filler necks with the j-spout. I am unfamiliar with this
problem in my experience with King Airs.

The development of the j-spout nozzle and the installation of the
restrictor plates in Avgas powered (recip) aircraft was the aviation
industry's response to the serious, and often fatal accidents caused by
misfueling. I say "industry's response" because the solution involved the
FAA, airframe manufacturers, oil companies, and other aviation
organizations such as AOPA, NATA, etc. Unfortunately, the solution was not mandatory, hence the problem with the j-spout not fitting into all turbine
powered aircraft. So the correct procedure when fueling a turbine aircraft
with the smaller opening, requires the line tech to switch the nozzle to
the straight spout. The switch to the straight spout should be done just
for this fueling. Afterwards, the j-spout should be put back on
immediately.

Another option is to use an adapter designed to fit on the end of the
J-Spout and allow it to fit in the smaller opening. The adapter is made by
Fjord Fueling Products that fits over the J-Spout when needed. But once
again, the adaptor should be removed once the fueling is completed. If
you'd like to purchase this or require additional information, you can call
the Air BP Parts Department at (800) 752-9220.

The real issue is the purpose of the j-spout. It prevents misfueling the
hundreds of other aircraft that it was designed for originally. We would
not preclude its use just because of a handful of aircraft. In the event
of a misfueling, the j-spout is an accepted practice and standard in the
industry. If it is found that this is not being used in an accident/incident investigation, your chances of being absolved of misfueling are slim to none. It is a key component to prevent misfueling and must be used regardless of its convenience".

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If I send my NATA Safety 1st test binders back to you, how can
I have proof that my line techs have tested?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good question! We recommend that you makes copies of the practical exam for your records. You can also make copies of the written exam to show that is was taken, but you will only receive a pass/fail notice. The copies can be placed in each of your line tech's files for recordkeeping purposes. Once the NATA Safety 1st certificate is received, make a copy of it as well for your records. And don't forget to hang the original certificate for all to see.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Worried about whether we received your NATA Safety
1st test binders?
In today's wired society, having the ability to track your
shipments online saves time. It's one of the most convenient ways
to ensure your materials get to their final destination. If you
don't have an online account with one of the major shipping
companies, it's worth investigating.
We ship most of our materials by UPS ground so we will use
this as an example. If you go to the UPS website, you can set
up an account. Once your account is set up, you'll need to enter
a User ID and password each time you want to make a shipment.
It's well worth the initial time because it will save you time in the
long run.
The benefits are many but just to name a few;
Store up to 300 addresses in an address book making repeatshipping a breeze
Access shipment details and tracking data for up to 90 days making it easy to confirm receipt
Customize preferences for fast, easy shipping and payment
Shipping software not required - it's all on the website
Print labels for packages online --- no special printer required
Ship multiple packages at one time
Order supplies
Check how long it will take for the package to arrive
Email feature that alerts recipient that packages have been mailed-
-- make sure to give us your email so that you will know when we ship
your materials
Ship away...
Recently an email has been circulating about self-fueling at gas
stations. This email contained information that was not valid. A little
research on the Petroleum Equipment Institute website set the record
straight. This information would be worth sharing with those you know. Follow the links listed below.
